National Indigenous History Month in Canada

June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada—a time to deepen our understanding of the distinct cultures, traditions, and lived experiences of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. It is a moment to honour the enduring presence, strength, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on these lands since time immemorial and continue to shape Canada’s past, present, and future.

Established by the House of Commons in 2009 as National Aboriginal History Month, the name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017 to reflect current terminology. In partnership with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada selected June 21—the summer solstice—as National Indigenous Peoples Day. This date holds deep significance, as many Indigenous communities have long celebrated the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, as a time of cultural renewal and connection.

To celebrate Indigenous Peoples History Month and Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, we have created a special bingo card for students! This engaging resource features a variety of lessons and activities that students can explore throughout the month. Full details and instructions are included on the bingo card itself.
