Each year, Black History Month recognizes the experiences, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black people and communities in Canada, while encouraging deeper understanding of their history and impact on Canadian society.
This year marks 30 years of Black History Month in Canada. It celebrates the achievements of those who have shaped our country, from historical figures who paved the way to contemporary leaders making meaningful contributions today.
The 2026 theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations – From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” reminds us to recognize both past and present contributions of Black people, highlighting their essential role in Canada’s history and culture while also looking ahead to the possibilities and leadership of future generations.
Throughout February, we are all invited to learn about and celebrate the accomplishments of Black Canadians across the country. Black History Month is also a time to reflect on Canada’s painful history and the systemic barriers that Black people continue to face, including anti-Black racism and discrimination. It is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared responsibility to address these challenges and to support Black futures rooted in equity, opportunity, and self-determination.
